It’s no secret.  Technology is evolving at a blistering pace.  Customer expectations continue to escalate. The pace of software development is increasing.  In 2019, this evolution will continue.

Here are some of the emerging trends that can help keep your products at the forefront.

CI/CD

If you are in the DevOps business, you know that Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Development (CD) have exploded in recent years. With the need for speed in market deployment, this cycle will accelerate. Automation is a must to meet these high paced demands.

Third-Party API Integrations

Another emerging trend is the reliance on external APIs rather than doing custom in-house development. Using third-party APIs can save time and reduce overall development timetables. When doing so, development teams are able to focus more attention on core source code and integration rather than developing custom solutions.

It can be an adjustment for software developers that are used to controlling every line of code.  However, when you’re trying to hustle products to market, any time you can save gets you one step closer to release.

More Containerization & Local Repositories

Containers solve application conflicts between different environments. By hosting applications inside portable environments, containers allow for collaboration between developers, testers, and admin easier. Tools like Docker and Kubernetes will continue to increase in popularity.

End-to-end solutions to manage development, vulnerability analysis, artifact flow control, and distribution will also be even more popular. Software solutions like JFrog’s private Docker registry integrates with Docker to create secure private registries to share images with greater control.

This becomes especially important as companies need to develop frontends for Web, iOS, and Android platforms.

Automating Routine Tasks

Doing repetitive or routine tasks can lead to burnout and increased errors among developers.  It also takes time that could be better used. In 2019, the push will be to automate everything possible so that teams can work on higher profile aspects of development.

AI-Driven Software Development

There is an increasing call for ways for non-programmers to build software. Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence tools are getting closer to developing automated software builds to develop web sites or apps using natural language.

There will also be an increased focus on delivering AI within apps and software. As consumers become more accustomed to AI features in software, the demand will only increase. Already, smartphone users expect things like predictive text, location-based suggestions, voice assistants, and route suggestions. This trend will continue to evolve with both consumer and B2B applications.

Increased Focus On Security

Security has become paramount for users. The cost of after-the-fact remediation can be expensive and potentially damaging for company reputations. In addition, testing for security can often bring projects to a halt and slow delivery schedules.

Many DevOps teams are being rebuilt as DevSecOps teams to fold in security as a core component of the software development life cycle. This means continuous testing as component parts are built rather than waiting until the end to test. This provides feedback throughout the production cycle that can help detect potential security problems earlier in the process.
